May 26th was a special day for Honda and Acura, as it marked the presentation event for the redefined version of the Acura RDX 2016. Now in its second generation, the new RDX brings an attractive design fit for the luxury SUV segment, and after being presented in the Chicago Auto Show in February, the car was introduced to the Mexican public in Centro Cultural Indianilla.
Leaving behind its more conventional look, the RDX surely stands out with its new design. It is not the common SUV that moms use to take their kids to school; this new model has a subtly aggressive look that will surely attract the interest of a young and enthusiastic segment. Overall, the car has a sportier and defined style, while its Jewel Eye headlights give it a sense of luxury and refinement. The grill and the bumpers give the RDX a powerful end, and the rims complete its look in a rather dreamily way.
The engine in this new model is a bit unusual as well compared to other brands, although it is quite common for Honda. Most cars use a double overhead camshaft approach (DOHC), but the RDX has a 6-cylinder engine with a V configuration and a single overhead camshaft (SOHC). It is quite a challenge to build a powerful and effective engine with this configuration, as the valves lose independence and become harder to control. Nevertheless, the new Acura also includes an i-VTEC system, so we would have to analyze how the RDX performs with its 279HP available. Additionally, this model features a 6 speed automatic transmission, but for those who like to stay in control, the RDX has paddle shifters in the steering wheel.
In terms of technology, the Acura RDX is more than complete. Just as other models, this car is equipped with AcuraWatch and all its safety features. Firstly, lane keeping assistance (LKAS+LDW) and adaptive cruise control (ACC) that offer a much more control ride. Next, an intelligent frontal collision brake system and a blind spot information system, which further expand the driver’s awareness. Finally, a collision mitigation by brake system and a full array of airbags for front and rear passengers that offer the best conditions possible in case of an accident.
Unlike some people, the new RDX is equally beautiful inside and out. Right away, the seats seem extremely comfortable, and the interiors come in ivory or black, to perfectly combine with the available exterior colors. The dashboard’s design is fairly simple, including an LCD screen with voice and steering wheel controls, and a touchscreen for audio, climate, and every other system in the vehicle. Among its most notable features, the vehicle includes GPS navigation system, Bluetooth and HandsFreeLink connectivity, iPhone compatibility through Siri, a 15GB hard drive, and a 10-speaker Elliot Scheiner surround sound system.
As everyone would have expected, Acura has delivered a truly attractive model with its new SUV. The RDX is extremely elegant, while keeping a sporty edge that will further expand is traditional fan base, so there is no doubt this model will have quite a success in the market.
