Aside from the crescent SUV segment, sedans are the most popular cars in Mexico, meaning there is a huge amount of brands and models, which makes it almost impossible to find one that really stands out. However, there are some companies that really know how to approach this, combining luxury and comfort, with enough raw power to exhilarate any driver. Audi’s A6 new is the perfect example. This car is on a completely different level, as it is not just a more expensive model with a premium tag. There are decades of experience and engineering inside this beauty that make it worth every penny, which is why we were so looking forward to driving it, and the results were everything we were hoping for.
In the Driving Seat
The only words we could use to describe the new A6 are luxurious and extremely comfortable. The car has beautiful lines that are both sporty and limousine like, framing an enormous cabin that looks comfortable right from the start.
The seats in this beast are amazing; they give such comfortable support to every part of your body that you never want to leave the vehicle, even Mexico City’s usually deadly traffic is all of a sudden not that big an issue, apart from the fact that this car demands you to push the pedal rather than the brakes. Everything is so spacious in the Audi A6 that you immediately feel at home, and although it sits five people perfectly, its design is much more suited for four people, like a real limousine. The seats are fully automated and they are quite solid and sturdy, which is a major plus with the powerful acceleration in this car.
In terms of visibility there seems to be no blind spots with the A6, and anything you might overlook is quickly detected by its array of sensors. Having said that, the front mirror and the dashboard screen are a little bit distracting as they fill almost the entire middle section of the windscreen, but they don’t disturb at all when sitting in the driver seat. And even if it disturbs, you can flip the screen down while the radio keeps on playing; marvelous. The anti-blinding option in the mirrors makes up for any other disadvantage, since it prevents horrible drivers from blinding you with their headlights.
The only downside is the car might feel huge at times, especially when you want to park or manoeuver around pesky drivers. The low bumpers in the S-line version can be a bit problematic, since you always have the feeling you are going to scratch them with the pavement, and with all the cameras and sensors you could feel overwhelmed when trying to park.
Ride & Performance
Nothing says smooth as driving the A6. The car is amazingly stable thanks to its low point of gravity, and it is not too bumpy even though it has a sport suspension and explosive power. It is an excellent car for your driver, although after a while you might fire him to drive it yourself. In terms of noise there is none whatsoever. The engine is extremely silent so there is no noise or vibration in the cockpit, and you have an almost complete isolation from outside noise.
The Audi has a fantastic response and the slightest pressure in the pedal results in an incredible acceleration, no matter how huge the vehicle is. Obviously, with great power comes great responsibility, which means that the brakes in the car are continuously tested, and they do their job just fine and make the car feel extremely safe and efficient.
There are some missteps with the A6 but nothing major. The steering wheel should offer a bit more resistance at high speeds, since it starts to feel a bit light on highways. Additionally, it should have a shorter turning cycle for the fast response you need in the city. The transmission is super-fast so, at 20-30km/h it has already shifted to 2nd or maybe 3rd, and when you want to accelerate at these speeds it costs a fraction of a second to find its power when kicking down the gears, which would not be expected from this car. However, its acceleration from 0 is astounding, and there is also the option of shifting manually with the flaps on the steering wheel for the more active driver to overcome minor lag.
Features & Safety
The A6’s exterior has wonderfully shaped head lights and a massive Q7 like grill that gives the car a fierce character, as well as remarkably subtle spoilers and elegant rims that attract jealous looks from most people on the road. When sitting in the driver’s seat you feel like a king. Everything is within reach: navigation, settings, media, A/C, and even opening the trunk (which is huge by the way) and almost everything is centralized in a single button, although for new users it might be complicated to understand at first because of the minimalistic approach. The controls’ design is beautiful and functional, with a much better response than touch screens which sometimes are a bit messy to use, and it is amazing to watch the screen appear out of nowhere when you start the car. Additionally, there is a second digital screen between the meters in the cluster, which tells you everything you should now about your trip: temperature, driving time, efficiency, consumption, driving distance, average speed, and even a compass.
For less experienced drivers and of great use to any driver really, the A6 includes parking assistance with a back camera and side sensors that detect everything around you. It is a car where you feel completely safe, aside from the fact that it is huge and some idiot might rip off the car’s nose in heavy traffic. The A6 also includes its four wheel drive system Quattro, which is renown worldwide for offering effective grip at all times, grabbing the car to the road. If this was not enough, the A6 also includes a self-parking option which is always useful and fun to watch.
Audi is already a premium brand, so if you want to buy one you already have to make a significant investment. Therefore, do not hesitate on kicking the extra pennies for the S-Line version and the Quattro system. These features make it look better, drive better, and they make you feel a lot safer, not to mention that they are an important added value if you ever want to resell the car.
If it was not clear enough already, the ruling is that the Audi A6 is a fantastic car. You can feel its tremendous power with every boost, but you can be sure you will always be safe. It is a beautiful car inside and out; the design is slick and stylish, and the interiors could not be more comfortable. The driver may have everything within reach, but that does not mean that the rest of the passengers will not enjoy the ride. The car includes front and rear automatic temperature, three-zone climate control, and a Bose 10-speaker audio system capable of switching the sound area with unbelievable precision. Without a doubt, Audi brings a stunning experience with this vehicle.
